Ipamorelin
Ipamorelin is a five-amino-acid synthetic peptide that prompts growth hormone release. Novo Nordisk created it, and the 1998 paper introducing it called it the first selective compound in its category.

What researchers study it for
- Selectivity for growth hormone over other pituitary hormones
- Animal work on which pituitary hormones respond
- Clearance kinetics and the GH reply in volunteers
- A phase 2 study in bowel recovery after surgery
How it is thought to work
It binds the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a), and the pituitary responds by letting out growth hormone. In pigs, ACTH and cortisol stayed flat, which set it apart from GHRP-2 and GHRP-6. A study in healthy volunteers saw one brief burst of GH and then nothing more.
Where the research stands
Reached phase 2; never approved. In a placebo-controlled phase 2 study of people recovering from bowel surgery (NCT00672074, 117 participants), tolerability was acceptable, yet the recovery measures came out no better than placebo.
