SNAP-8

SNAP-8 is a trade name for acetyl octapeptide-3, sometimes listed as acetyl octapeptide-1, a synthetic peptide of eight amino acids found in cosmetic products. One review gives its sequence as Glu-Glu-Met-Gln-Arg-Arg-Ala-Asp, which includes the six residues of acetyl hexapeptide-3.

What researchers study it for

  • Appearance of wrinkles in cosmetic studies
  • SNARE complex assembly in the test tube
  • Microneedle patch formulations
  • Nanoparticle carriers for skin delivery

How it is thought to work

The suggested explanation is that the peptide copies a stretch of the SNAP-25 protein and competes with it when the SNARE complex assembles, which lowers neurotransmitter release in cell experiments. Much of this rests on manufacturer data repeated in review articles. We found no independent confirmation that this happens in skin.

Where the research stands

Cosmetic ingredient; thin independent evidence. Very little peer-reviewed work exists. The two human studies located used microneedle patches containing several ingredients and were written by company-affiliated authors, so nothing can be pinned on this peptide by itself. ClinicalTrials.gov lists no trials.
