Thymalin
Thymalin is not one defined peptide but a mixture: a complex of polypeptides extracted from calf thymus, with pieces up to roughly 10 kDa in size. Two dipeptides, Lys-Glu and Glu-Trp, are named as its active parts.

What researchers study it for
- Maturation of T lymphocytes
- Immune activity during infections
- Studies of add-on use in COVID-19
- Production of inflammatory cytokines
How it is thought to work
Those who developed thymalin acknowledge that its molecular mechanism has yet to be worked out. Two laboratory observations are reported. First, hematopoietic stem cells from humans, grown in culture with the extract, showed less CD44 and CD117 (both stem-cell markers) and more CD28, a pattern the researchers interpret as maturation into T lymphocytes. Second, when peripheral blood mononuclear cells from donors were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide, the extract reduced how much IL-1beta, IL-6 and TNF-alpha they released.
Where the research stands
Registered medicine in Russia (a thymus extract); no FDA approval found. According to one source, Russia has approved thymalin as an immunomodulator since 1982. The COVID-19 trial we read was open-label, run at a single center, and enrolled 92 patients. No FDA label or ClinicalTrials.gov record turned up. These statements concern the registered Russian product, not research-grade material.
